In 2018 Álvaro Salazar celebrates his 80th anniversary and it is for this reason that the MIC.PT In Focus section in November is dedicated to this composer, conductor and musicologist, whose work constitutes a reference point in Portuguese contemporary culture.
Born in Porto in 1938, Álvaro Salazar was one of the first Portuguese composers to carry out a specialized research regarding electroacoustic and concrete music. In 1965 he decided to destroy all the works he had presented until that point, having considered his language incoherent and out-dated. Since then his music has possessed a particular taste for textures, in which sound objects are carved by silence. Although he has been frequently classified as a serialist composer his catalogue (after 1965) does not contain any dodecaphonic work. The influences in his musical language include the Second Viennese School, but also Edgar Varèse, Morton Feldman and Franco Donatoni, among others.
In 1978 Álvaro Salazar founded the Oficina Musical, ensemble dedicated to the study and performance of new music. As conductor he gave first performances in Portugal and around the world of works by such significant authors as Janáček, Ives, Webern, Varèse, Eisler, Feldman, Ligeti...
This month (re)discover the work of Álvaro Salazar, visiting the MIC.PT In Focus section where we publish an interview with the composer, carried out in October this year. The interview will also make part of another MIC.PT Dossier dedicated to Álvaro Salazar, whose release will take place in one of the following months.
